It's not fair when you say that I didn't try

[Let It Die-Three Days Grace]

how do you know when someone doesnt want to be your friend anymore? barring any major circumstances (a fight, etc) its not as if you often get a memo stating "sorry, we arent friends anymore". people dont often walk up and say "sorry but our friendship is over" its not something people just announce to you, though that would make things alot easier. its more like a planned set a steps and hints that lead to the ultimate goal: a discontinuation of a friendship. there are signs. unanswered calls and texts. the invites stop. and the big one, you come up with excuses not to hang out with the other person. if you can stop hanging out together, you can slowly distance yourself and then it wont be so hurtful when the other person realizes you arent friends any longer. instead you can look back and say "we drifted apart" rather than "he/she just didnt want to be my friend any more" i know. i have done this to people before. but it sucks when you start to realize you are on the receiving end of this severing of ties.

is there an exact number of times that you shoud get rejected before you just give up? can you say to yourself "well this person has turned me down to hang out X number of times, therefore i should just stop trying"? what if they are sending you mixed signals? what if they turn you down to hang out, but they still send you randoms texts just to talk, just to joke around like you used to? or is this all just wishful thinking? how much of a fight do you put up to stop the inevitable attrition of a friendship? i suppose it depends on how much its worth fighting for.
